Welcome back to Sean's blog of l33t LAN gaming and absolutely nothing else. Honestly, I don't know why I bother -- at this point, Facebook's probably more convenient. I suppose I might drop this invite there as well...
Anyhow, with no further ado, I invite you, one and all, to Sean's 23rd birthday party! You probably know the drill by now -- bring friends with computers, presents optional, pizza provided -- but just in case, here's the goods, complete with blatant self-plagiarism because it's late and I'm tired.
- Who: Anyone who is reading this LJ, lives in the Bay Area, and has an even-slightly game-capable computer. And all your friends who have game machines as well.
- What: My 23nd Birthday LAN Party
- When: Saturday, June 21st from noon until Dad kicks you all out
- Where: My house
- What to bring: All game-capable PCs, hopefully with copies of LAN favorites all pre-loaded and ready to go (and extra copies to distribute!) Ethernet switches, cables and power strips if you have them lying around. A gift if you feel generous - none are expected but all are appreciated. A suggested gift-list follows this invitation.
- What will be provided: Dinner, snacks, drinks, power outlets, as many ethernet cables as we can dig up, and my aging eight-port 10/100 ethernet switch, if I can find the blasted thing.
Wish list:
- Not so affordable:
- Decently affordable:
- Grado SR60 Headphones
- No-frills USB keyboard with decent keys for typing, gaming

Five months since I've posted on LJ... countless days since I've been on AIM... all due to the rigors of finishing up my last year of college, simultaneously searching for a job, and spending whatever time is left over catching up on the games I've missed. Would you believe I still have yet to crack open FFXII and Okami?
Yesterday most of my work came finally, beautifully to fruition. After finishing my last final ever at UCSB (don't clap yet, I have a paper due Sunday) which I'd studied my ass off for and likely did fairly well in, I got a call from Conde Nast Publications, letting me know that if I wanted it, I have an internship with Wired Magazine. Ohhhhh yeahhh.
I was far too busy to post anything about my job interviews on LJ before, but suffice it to say that Wired kicks tremendous ass. They're hiring me full-time, Monday through Friday at $12 an hour to go write, edit, and likely run lots of errands for them, and I couldn't be more excited. They seem like awesome people, they run a tight ship, and I think I'll fit in very well.
And in four days, I'm graduating UCSB with high honors, receiving my B.A. in Communication and Japanese (yes, I just barely eked out a double-major in four years) and heading back home to see all of you... unless of course I missed a requirement somewhere, God forbid.
So... it's been almost six months since my Xmas LAN, and since then at least a couple of you got computer upgrades...
BIRTHDAY LAN PLANNING COMMENCE!

- Where:My house
- What to bring: All game-capable PCs, hopefully with copies of LAN favorites all pre-loaded and ready to go (and extra copies to distribute!) Ethernet switches, cables and power strips if you have them lying around. A gift if you feel generous - none are expected but all are appreciated. A suggested gift-list follows this invitation.
- What will be provided: Dinner, snacks, drinks, power outlets, as many ethernet cables as we can dig up.
Suggested gift list:
- Money to fix up my car (every little bit helps)

Thanks to friends, family, and my aching wallet (it's going to bite me in the a$$ one day for spending this much...), I am now the proud owner of Final Fantasy XII, Zelda: Twilight Princess (GameCube), Yakuza, and Okami, not to mention clearance steals Sigma Star Saga and Chronicles of Riddick. Ohhhhh yeaaah. 'big grin' Who needs a next-gen console?
Add in the entire queue I've set up for myself of other unfinished/unstarted games, mix in a few never-ending heavy hitters like Oblivion, BF2 and UT2k4, and finish with a pinch of free HL2 mods. That's the recipe to tide one satisfied gamer over until PS4, Xbox 720 and Everybodii hit the market. | » Zooomr rocks! |
Thanks to Textamerica dumping the vast reservoir of pictures Kero and I had accumulated like so much garbage, I was finally motivated to go through my Japan pictures. They are now properly rotated, weeded of duplicates and multiple takes, and thanks to a truly kickass website called Zooomr, they are all being hosted once again for your viewing pleasure.
But that's not all. Since Zooomr (among other state-of-the-art picture sites) uses SmartSets, Tags and GeoTags, the pictures are also now sorted... you can click on my Profile to see the categories I've divided my pictures into. Just want to see my Tokyo Game Show experience? Click here. Want to see exactly where I stood when taking a picture? Click here for an example.
However... there are just too many of these picture for me to label, place into sets and GeoTag all on my own... If you're interested in a particular picture, or even a bunch of them, please comment and let me know that you'd like to know what the picture is, or where I took it... I'll even go so far as to find translation for Japanese text if possible.
Thanks!

It's the first game to use the PS3 controller's motion-sensing tilt functions... so it's a bit of a landmark. Enjoy!

It's that time of year again. Nature comes to full, vibrant life; sidewalks start to scorch those in bare feet; students get out of school; and the fragging commences at Sean's birthday LAN party.
This time, Sean turns legal - and invites all of you his friends to frag him a full 21 times in the comfort of his home. Thanks to our sponsor Mr. Jason Hollister, a delicious dinner of homemade pizza will be served, followed by cake.

by getting serious about actually working in the industry. In order of achievement:
- I will be working at EA Games, Redwood City as a Localization Tester starting July 10th. I can't wait.
- I'm working for a gaming website that looks to have great promise. Check out The International House of Games right here, or skip straight to my:
- I got to go to E3 2006! It was... well, awesome. A hell of a lot bigger than Tokyo Game Show, and with far too much to do and not enough time to see it all. I got to play the best three PlayStation 3 games though, and they were badass. I also bumped into Shigeru Miyamoto himself - the father of Nintendo - and got to see him try his rival's motion sensing controller out on the Warhawk PS3 game. I was too in awe to get pictures or speak to him directly, so you'll just have to take my word for it!
And with that, I vanish back into the void of schoolwork from whence I came.

» V for Vendetta
I don't have too much to say here... I've been so busy with school and procrastination that I haven't managed to do much of anything this quarter outside of those. However, I do have two things to mention:
1. I got an invitation from a new group of video gaming friends I met over here to work on gaming reviews for an actual gaming website the leader of the group has been developing. They are intelligent, motivated people, I think this might really be my start - as long as I can string together English words fluently enough. I've been having an increasing amount of trouble with this recently. Perhaps it's because I haven't been reading for pleasure very much if at all anymore. We'll see where it goes.
2. Go see V for Vendetta. I won't lie, this movie is the best thing I've ever seen on a theatre screen. Or any other screen, for that matter. It's gripping, moving, thrilling and dynamic without sacrificing intelligence in the bargain. I looked away from the screen precisely once during my entire 132 minutes, and that was only to see if my friends sitting next to me were just as blown away as I am. I don't know what else to say without spoiling the plot... oh yeah - do yourself a favor and don't learn any more than you have to before watching.
If anybody wants to go see it over Spring break (mine is March 24th through April 2nd) I'd be more than happy to see it again in theatres.

» Homework is no fun but...
Due to a whole massive ton of random luck when playing around with Nanaca Crash, I managed a score I doubt I'll ever top again:

I'd always despised the dark-haired girl because she would block other girls who boosted your battered hero up into the sky, yet allowing the other guys to impede your progress... but it seems that she is really the key to the whole game (aside from a crapload of luck, of course). She saved me from the glasses girl at least six times during the course of my kickass high score run, in addition to providing me with not one, but two Cosmic Force Fields, one of which was the Type 4 ground bounce which, in addition to my saved extra upwards boosts, gave me a vertical high score of over 350m...
I'm also surprised how full of anticipation something like Nanaca Crash can make me, even and especially when I have no control over it... I was glued to my keyboard, mouse and monitor for those five or so minutes. I've been playing F.E.A.R., an FPS Horror game, and nothing it has thrown at me so far has made me quite so glued to the screen.
Speaking of F.E.A.R., my killer PC is pretty smoking hot when it comes to most of the games I've tried on it so far... except F.E.A.R. While the game still looks pretty damn good, it won't run with the FPS I'd expected from reviews of the graphic card I ended up getting without seriously crippling the featureset. The automatic settings it was giving me for a guarenteed good framerate didn't include any anti-aliasing at all! By swapping some things around and taking hits in other areas, I was at able to salvage 2x AA with a playable framerate.
Can't wait to get off school for the weekend and come home to Kristin and family... 'sigh' Games and such keep me from being too lonely but I still don't care for the college here, aside from its Japanese and Comm programs.

» Simple update
I've been slacking off again when it comes to LJing, but here are the major points of my life recently:
- Had fun over Winter Break with my honey Kristin, dependable gaming friends and family as well
- Got a Sidekick II as an awesome present from Dad, but T-Mobile deleted all my data so no matter how well I know you, I probably lost your contact info. Please post it in a comment here if I haven't already gotten it from you!
- Got many awesome games from friends and family and pocket money... I'm happily very busy with games like Shadow of the Colossus, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones and We Love Katamari. If JJ is sitting over their shaking his head, he should know that I also brought Lunar to UCSB :-P
- Built my killer PC that can play anything out there on the highest graphical settings with 6X AA, 16X AS and better than decent framerate. If specs are asked for, they will be posted. I just don't like to brag much :-P All I care about is seeing things like that HL2: Lost Coast demo in all their HDR glory. Have to say tho, HDR pulls my framerate WAY down to noticable levels. Can't be perfect I guess.
- To my great sadness, went back to UCSB for the rest of the year... gonna miss you people, but I guess this is a good opportunity to get back in touch with some UCSB friends - if I can find them w/o their contact info...
- Lost all my email (I think) making it hard to contact people in Japan who emailed me and such... hopefully I'll get them back soon.
- Spent a shitload of time working thru UCSB's new internet logon policy... you not only have to install this Cisco Clean Access Agent program they're using now and revalidate every week, but it sends you through this runaround to make sure your computer has all its updates and viruscan and such... apparently SP1 isn't good enough for them, so I had to install SP2. Here's hoping nothing screws up on this new machine of mine.
And that's all I can think of for the moment. Later!

It's snowing here in Tsuru.
If I get tommorrow's final paper and homeworks out of the way before it's pitch black, maybe I'll go enjoy the snow.
Not likely though.
UPDATE: 3:48 A.M. Japan Time
No dice, no snow for me. Just finished a paper in Japanese (2400 characters or above was the minimum) which is the most awesome thing I've ever written in Japanese yet probably chock full of errors and if in English would probably look like a lot of b.s... The paper took me forever to do even though the topic was easy, which frightens me to death about tommorrow's paper, which needs to be twice as long and is about... Japanese economic conditions during and after the war. Great stuff. </sarcasm> Oh yeah, forgot all the other crap due tommorrow... man this last part of my trip sucks pretty bad.

» Stress and one hell of a dinner
First off, if anybody knows anyone else who could help me by filling out the survey I have two posts below, whether they watch anime or not, please refer them! Only requirement is that they're a college student, since I'm trying to compare that group.
Been pretty damn busy lately. All the final projects and papers and such are falling on my head now, so I haven't had much time to post up pictures or write LJs and the like. Since today is sort of a Japanese Labor Day over here, I've got a bit of time right now, but don't be surprised if this is one of my last posts before I get back in 2.5 weeks.
Example: Kasahara-sensei, our Japanese Modern History teacher, comes into the classroom yesterday and proceeds to hand us a thick packet of reading, about as thick as the one that we started reading the first day of class and just finished now. He then follows up by asking us what date we're going to be leaving Japan, and upon hearing that we have ONLY ONE MORE CLASS WITH HIM, tells us we still need to finish the whole next chapter and then assigns us one heck of a difficult final. We first have to write four 40x30 character pages in Japanese about the reading we've been doing and history therein, and then afterwards write a page in English commenting on the class. While I'm worried about the Japanese work (four pages is a heck of a lot, and I've never got the hang of commenting on fairly cause-effect styled history courses), the page in English will be easy at least. I can probably whip up a page flaming the class for giving us such a biased, dull text and then dig into the professor for handing us the final and extra reading without preparing us in the least. It's sad really. I really respect the man... I wish he'd spent the time togther teaching us about his interesting personal work (he's heavily involved with the Nanjing Massacre and Japanese Textbook issues) instead of this crappy text.
I do have plenty of good outlets for stress at least... Getting Naruto 4 on day one didn't hurt any :-P It's mostly the same as Naruto 3, but they mixed it up a little bit by allowing sidesteps while dashing, and added a pretty cool three-man tag team mode. It doesn't seem like there's an option for four players on two tag-teams though, sadly. I can't quite figure out how to unlock more characters yet though.
Monday marked the first time I've eaten REAL sushi in Japan. Torii-sensei, whose Japanese Culture seminar we attend, had promised us we'd eat sushi for a while... but I never expected anything along the lines of what he provided for us. The EAP Study Center director had come to Tsuru that day to give a lecture in English in place of Torii-sensei's class. We learned about very influential Japanese exchange students, and then proceeded with the director up to the teacher's lounge where it was said Torii-sensei had been making us a feast.
And how. Torii-sensei and assistant set forth first for us black laquered boxes filled with the freshest, tastiest goodies I've yet seen in Japan. There was incredible sashimi, delicatly cooked eggplant, fresh oysters, foil-wrapped mushrooms and chicken, carefully seared steak and something else I have yet to identify. This in itself was more than enough... but then came a small mound of fresh baby shrimp and some special sashimi with real wasabi. After that, Torii-sensei (who I'd always thought of as slightly eccentric) set before us huge, live prawns. While mine thankfully didn't move a great deal, many of us learned great respect for our fearsome looking food that day. While I fared fairly well, having had lessons in deshelling shrimp before from Kristin's family, the ryuugakusei and even the Japanese girls who joined us for this feast had among them those quite intimidated by the prospect of snapping of the head and sharp-looking arms of a live shrimp, pulling off shell, feelers and tail and then popping it into the mouth. It was really quite good, but I certainly wouldn't do it again by choice.
Then Torii-sensei and assistant stood off the far end of the table, hand-shaping round after round of sushi for us to eat. All kinds of fish, squid, even uni(sea-urchin) toppings were made for us to gratefully sample. When I already felt quite full... then came dessert. Torii-sensei had provided slices of cakes, pastries and cheesecake from the local bakery. Amazing. I sure hope the school budget paid for all of this, because I certainly could never afford a meal of that type myself.
I'll provide what few pictures I have... when I have the time! Sorry!

» My thought on the Sony DRM issue goes along these lines...
From bash.org: http://www.bash.org/?577451
I will write on a huge cement block "BY ACCEPTING THIS BRICK THROUGH YOUR WINDOW, YOU ACCEPT IT AS IS AND AGREE TO MY DISCLAIMER OF ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AS WELL AS DISCLAIMERS OF ALL LIABILITY, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL, THAT MAY ARISE FROM THE INSTALLATION OF THIS BRICK INTO YOUR BUILDING." And then hurl it through the window of a Sony officer and run like hell
Makes for a great analogy... not that Sony's necessarily all to blame but...
